CAUSES OF HEADACHES: SPECIAL PROBLEMS WITH SPECTACLES

Two specific problems that have a direct bearing on headaches can arise when using spectacles. Firstly, as more and more people are using computers it becomes important to be able to see the screen clearly. We look at the computer screen from considerably further than the distance at which we read a book, so glasses that are correct for reading may not be quite right for looking at the computer screen. If you seem to get eye-strain after a lot of computer work, it may be a good idea to get the optician to check your eyes at the distance at which you normally view the computer screen. In some circumstances, and particularly when you are doing a lot of work at the computer or VDU, it may be appropriate to get glasses specially made for that purpose.

A specific problem causing headaches can occur in some people who use bifocals. The line between the lower and the upper lenses creates an odd blurred effect, and it isn’t easy to look at something through this area of the glasses. Unfortunately, the normal angle at which we hold the head means this line often falls just at the top of the page we’re trying to look at. It is not uncommon to see people with bifocals putting their head back slightly in order to be able to read the top few lines of the piece of paper they’re holding in their hand..

Unfortunately, bending the head backwards in this way strains the joint between two vertebrae in the neck which, after a period of four or five years, can give rise to headaches. It is much better if you keep your head where it ought to be and use your hands to move the book down slightly so that you can read the top line of the page without cocking back your head. Alternatively, get a multi-focal lens with a gradation in strength over the whole of the visual field, with no sharp cutoff. Because there is no cut-off line there is less need to cock the head back
