IS TREATMENT EFFECTIVE?
It is often assumed by families and some members of the medical profession that once a diagnosis of cancer is made, the older person should be allowed to “die in peace.” This is unfair, because many older individuals will respond well to anticancer treatment.
Although in most instances the cancer will not be cured, you may feel a significant improvement in your symptoms and have your life prolonged in a comfortable manner. No one should be deprived of these benefits because of age alone. It is interesting that malignancy in older people often progresses very slowly. Who is to say that, during the extra time therapy gives you, some major event may not occur in your life or a new form of treatment may not be found for your disease?
Will Cancer Return after Treatment? Although many malignancies respond to treatment for a period of time, sometimes the disease returns. This does not mean that a second course of treatment will not be successful, especially since new types of treatment are constantly being discovered.
