MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE
Motor neurone disease, which affects the nerves and muscles, is more often found in younger people, but it may start in the later years. The cause of this ailment is unknown. The first symptoms are usually muscular weakness, twitching, and clumsiness. Within a short period there may be difficulty in speaking, swallowing, and breathing. There is a tendency to inhale food and saliva and develop aspiration pneumonia.
So far no treatment has been found to correct this illness. As the disease progresses, extensive nursing care is necessary, so hospitalization is often required. In some, the illness progresses slowly. Measures to strengthen weakened muscles with braces and special diets to facilitate swallowing may give some relief from symptoms of weakness and the tendency to choke on food. Unfortunately, most older people die from the disease within two or three years.
