THE NOSE AND THROAT DISORDERS: HOARSENESS
In many instances hoarseness or a deepening of the voice may occur during a cold or flulike illness. In these situations it is short-lived and disappears within a few weeks. Rest your voice by avoiding loud talking or singing, and use a humidifier if the air in your home is very dry.
If hoarseness lasts for more than two or three weeks, immediate medical advice should be sought and your larynx (voice box) examined. Tumors, both benign and malignant, can occur on the larynx and cause hoarseness. Malignant tumors, when found in the early stages, can be treated effectively and sometimes cured with radiation. In the later stages surgery may be required.
You might develop hoarseness as part of hypothyroidism. The change in your voice may be gradual, and it may be noticed only by friends and family who have not seen you for some time. With proper thyroid hormone replacement, your voice should improve.
The habit of constantly clearing the throat can be a nervous quirk related to anxiety and worry or the result of mucus dripping from the back of your nose, in which case treatment with a nonsedating antihistamine often helps.
